Yaki-imo

So, just as I have gotten settled in, Fall is here.

The temperature is dropping and the women here are already getting out their fur mufflers. On top of it all, you never know when its going to rain. I have a feeling I’m going to be living in  boots for the next couple of months.

My neighbourhood is pretty noisy, there are always trucks going around telling you something, and of course there is the cheerful little song everyday at 17:30 telling all the school children to go home. But lately, once the sun has gone down, there has been a different sound.

At first it sounded like a chant, far off and distant, but then the sound grew louder and louder and I could distinguish those words “ishi yaaaki-imo,” stone roasted yams. His truck with its red glowing lanterns rolled right down my street in front of the apartment, and I think that he saw me peeking through the window because he stopped for a moment on his way.

Apparently they have been around in Japan for 100’s of years, selling their wares on two wheeled carts. Well, this yaki-imo san had a truck and a speaker system so I guess times have changed.

Maybe one night I might pay him a visit and get one of those yummy hot sweet potatoes he’s been singing about all night.
